My Favourite Vegan Finds: The "Must Have" Items on my Shopping List

By OneMoreLightLB - January 02, 2019

So all of my lovely followers on the socials will know that I'm a newbie vegetarian in the process of trying to go entirely plant based or vegan. It's not something I actually write about much, but since it's Veganuary I thought I would do a shout out to my favourite vegan products, the things I get every food shop!

Seasoned vegans will know their way round a spicy bean burger and even the newest plant-based person can figure them out, but what I think everyone struggles with is dairy free milk, chocolate and - most of all - cheese! So this post is more a focus on these items than your standard veggie burgers; it also doesn't go into meals at food chains or restaurants and I was in no way sponsored for this by any of the companies.

Number 1: ASDA's Garlic and Herb Soft Cheese Substitute.

Oh my GOD I am in love with this stuff! It tastes so garlicky and creamy; it's good as a cheese spread or for using in cooking. I really feel like ASDA has blown the other supermarkets out of the water with their vegan cheese range, and all of them are really good but this for me is a stand out. In my opinion it beats other brands of vegan cheese and tends to be cheaper too!

Number 2: Flora Vegan Spread

I use this for sandwiches and for cooking (cakes, pastry etc) and it's great all round.

Number 3: Sheese Cheddar Style with Jalapeno and Chilli

Another stand out for the vegan cheese products (again purchased in ASDA); I love this cheese from Bute Island Foods. It's exactly the kind of cheese I would have gone for before and it makes an amazing topper for vegan chilli cheese fries!

Number 4: Oatly Oat Drink

I tried most of the the dairy free milks and this is by far my favourite! It was recommended to me by some Twitter buds after I struggled with almond milk etc in coffee and tea. I prefer Oatly to Alpro's version as it's a bit creamier. I use it in everything now (including baking).

Number 6: Whole Food Bars

A little bit cakey but still "healthy" (probably not exactly but hey, more healthy than just cake) I love whole food bars. My favourites are TREK (above) and Nakd cocoa bars. Great for snacking (and all too often, my breakfast on working days).

Number 7: M&S Dairy Free Chocolate

So this is a bit of a cheat because I've literally just discovered this but I know chocolate is something I struggle with when it comes to vegan or plant based eating and I was really impressed with this chocolate bar. I would definitely make a point of buying this routinely.

New Entry at Number 8: Kent and Fraser Chocolate Brownie

Another bit of a cheat, but I picked up this brownie (which looks to be a relatively new product) in Sainsbury's the day I wrote this post and it is so, so delicious! So chocolatey and moist (sorry, I know that word is widely hated but it's so accurate) and it honestly tastes amazing! If it's the chocolate and the cakes you're struggling to kick then this is a must have!

Honourable Mentions

  1. Linda McCartney Red Onion and Rosemary Vegetarian Sausages (these are always on my list but I think most people know about these).
  2. Iceland's No Bull Burgers
  3. Fry Family's Peppered Steak Pies (had this for New Year's dinner and was so impressed).

I'm currently working my way through some of M&S's new range of vegan foods to review for Veganuary. If there are any products you're interested in then let me know!

You don't need to be vegan to enjoy vegan food or cut down on meat or dairy, and these are all great options for non-vegans too!

Happy Veganuary!

  3. I seriously want to try that alternative cheese spread! Cheese is the thing I would miss the most from being a vegan. My dad always buys that butter (that's not butter) and he loves Linda McCartney, especially the pulled pork burgers. They're soooo good even I love those x
